Vol. 452 No. 8

Written Answers. - TB Reactor Animals.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

210 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total number of animals that tested positive for TB in 1994; the total number that tested positive after being sent to the factory; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8698/95]

A total of 30,439 TB reactor animals were disclosed in 1994 of which 36.5 per cent showed visible lesions on post-mortem examination. The absence of visible lesions in a reactor animal at post-mortem examination does not mean that the animal is not infected with the tuberculosis organism. Lesions disclosed in the host animal merely indicate that the disease has progressed to an advanced stage.
