Ceist:21 Mr. McCreevy asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has for the expansion or development of his Department's veterinary service. [8813/95]

A proposal to recruit additional veterinary personnel was sanctioned in order to cater for new veterinary controls arising under the Single Market. In this regard, a total of 27 additional veterinary inspectors together with five veterinary research officers have been appointed within the past 18 months. A further two veterinary research officers are expected to be appointed in the near future.
As with all Department operations, activities in the veterinary area are monitored regularly with a view to increasing efficiency where considered necessary.
