Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

59 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the present levels of stock in intervention: and the storage costs for each of the last three years. [7677/95]

The total quantity of Irish beef, dairy products and cereals in intervention at end of March 1995 was as follows: boneless beef, 23,000 metric tonnes; bone-in beef, 856 metric tonnes: butter, 15,464 metric tonnes; skimmed milk powder, 41,452 metric tonnes: barley, 65,766 metric tonnes.

The gross cost to the Exchequer for each of the last three years in relation to the operation of the intervention system for all products, beef, butter, skimmed milk powder and cereals was £55.1 million in 1992, £57 million in 1993 and £39 million in 1994. This includes storage, handling, freezing and transport. Receipts from Brussels amounted to £36.1 million in 1992, £42.4 million in 1993 and £27.5 million in 1994 leaving a net cost of £19 million, £14.6 million and £11.5 million respectively to the Exchequer.
