Vol. 452 No. 8

Written Answers. - BSE Incidence.

Eoin Ryan

Ceist:

65 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of detected cases of mad cow disease in 1994 and to date in 1995; the assurance he can give to consumers that no meat from BSE-infected herds finds its way into the human food chain; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8653/95]

Nineteen cases of BSE occurred in 1994 and seven, to date, in 1995. The carcases of affected animals are destroyed and compensation paid to the herd-owners. As there is no evidence that BSE is an infectious disease, there are no restrictions on the sale and use of meat from other animals in the herd.
