Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - Turkish Intervention in Northern Iraq.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

63 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if the use of Turkish airforce planes in northern Iraq was in violation of the United Nations no-fly zone; if the use of ground troops in the area violates the United Nations safe haven; and if he has protested to the United Nations regarding these violent actions. [7420/95]

The Government was gravely concerned at the Turkish intervention in northern Iraq in an area designated by the United Nations as a protected zone and the risks this action posed for civilians and refugees in the area.

The Government's views were made known directly to the Turkish authorities and we joined with our partners in the European Union in concerted and sustained diplomatic action with a view to securing an early withdrawal of Turkish troops. Turkey announced at the beginning of this month that it had completed the withdrawal of all of its armed forces from northern Iraq.
