Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Closures in Riyadh.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

70 Mr. Killeen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if any Irish nationals have been denied access to suitable education due to the closure of 30 schools in Riyadh; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9389/95]

I am not aware of any Irish children having been affected by school closures in Riyadh. Several schools there, catering mainly for Asian children, were closed by the Saudi Ministry of Education on the grounds that it was not satisfied about their compliance with their conditions of registration. I understand that some of the schools affected have since reopened with the agreement of the Ministry of Education and discussions with others are continuing. Most Irish children living in Riyadh attend the Saudi Arabian International School which has not been affected and which continues to function normally.
