Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - Trainees in Sheltered Workshops.

Helen Keogh

Ceist:

89 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Health the employment status which applies to trainees in sheltered workshops; the rights they have; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7633/95]

Limerick East): At present trainees attending sheltered workshops generally receive payments ranging from £12 to £30 per week in addition to any State allowances to which they may be entitled. They also retain any secondary benefits to which they may be entitled, i.e. free travel, TV licence, telephone rental etc., and married trainees receive allowances in respect of dependants.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities is examining the current situation of people with a disability and the organisation and adequacy of existing services, both public and voluntary to meet their needs. The commission is due to report to Government at the end of this year and will include recommendations concerning training and employment of people with disabilities.
