Ceist:

111 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Education when she intends to establish the new boards of governors for regional technical colleges and the Dublin Institute of Technology in view of the fact that the term of office of the previous boards expired on 31 March 1995, and in view of the fact that the Dublin Institute of Technology and regional technical college legislation places responsibility for overall management and control on these boards; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Under the provision of section 4 (1) of the Regional Technical Colleges (Amendment) Act, 1994 and the Dublin Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1994 the ordinary members of governing bodies shall be appointed by the Minister on the recommendation of the vocational education committee.

To date, on the recommendation of the relevant vocational education committees, I have appointed ordinary members of governing bodies in the regional technical colleges at Cork, Dundalk, Galway, Limerick and Tallaght.

In the case of four vocational education committees, while recommendations have been received, a number of issues need to be resolved before appointments can be made.

Recommendations are still outstanding from a further two vocational education committees.
