Vol. 453 No. 5

Written Answers. - Smoking Ban.

Hugh Byrne

Ceist:

14 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to extend the ban on smoking in public places; and if he will consider a total ban in places where food is consumed. [7776/95]

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

52 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to introduce a ban on smoking in public places in view of the fact that one in four deaths in Ireland is caused by heart disease universally recognised as a consequence of smoking: and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9464/95]

Limerick East): I propose to answer Questions Nos. 14 and 52 together.

I am at present finalising an action plan to reduce the incidence of smoking and, in particular, to strengthen and extend the controls on smoking in public places including places where food is consumed. I expect to announce the details of the plan in the very near future.
