Vol. 453 No. 5

Written Answers. - Nursing Accommodation.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

25 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the urgent need for additional long stay nursing accommodation in the Dublin area; the research undertaken and actual identification made; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9470/95]

Limerick East): The Eastern Health Board has recently carried out a review of services for the elderly in its catchment area. This review prioritises proposed service developments for the elderly over a four year period having considered the demographic situation and identified needs of the elderly population.

The board has already agreed a captial programme with my Department for the years 1994-97. This programme which is jointly funded by the Eastern Health Board and my Department includes provision for the development of an in-patient unit and day care unit for the elderly in part of the former Sir. Patrick Dun's Hospital and also the development of two community units for the elderly, one of which will be situated at Navan Road, Dublin 7. As the Deputy will be aware, proposals for further developments are being considered by the board and are likely to be submitted to the Department shortly. I welcome this initiative by the board, which seeks to address one of the most pressing service problems in the Dublin area.
