Vol. 453 No. 6

Written Answers. - Meat Company Irregularities.

Eamon Walsh

Ceist:

126 Mr. E. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his views on whether persons who were directors of meat companies involved in the EU and Irish tax frauds are fit persons to continue as directors of Irish Meat or other companies; the steps, if any, that have been taken to have those persons declared ineligible; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9764/95]

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the irregularities which were uncovered in the course of the Tribunal of Inquiry into the Beef Processing Industry.

The question of whether directors of meat companies or other companies involved in fraud are fit persons to continue as directors of companies is a matter for determination by the High Court in the context of the Companies Act, 1990. I should add that my Department has referred the report of the beef tribunal to the Director of Public Prosecutions for appropriate action.
