104 Mr. E. Walsh asked the Minister for Justice the number of crimes in which vehicles with false number plates have been involved in the past year; if she will introduce a system requiring each manufacturer of number plates to be licensed and to keep a log of plates made and the party for whom they were made; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics are not available regarding the number of crimes involving vehicles with false number plates in the year past.
The question of introducing a system requiring, inter alia, that each manufacturer of number plates be licensed, is one for consideration in the first instance by the Minister for the Environment, who is responsible for the legislation governing the exhibition of identification marks on vehicles.
