No previous parliamentary question was put down to me or my predecessor by the Deputy in connection with the matter referred to by him. Correspondence was received by my predecessor, however, in connection with this matter. Because arrears of applications for naturalisation had built up in my Department in the recent past it was decided to give priority to clearing these applications over items of general correspondence. Work is now well advanced on clearing the arrears and a reply will issue to the Deputy's query shortly.
