Vol. 453 No. 8

Written Answers. - Monitoring of Air Emissions.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

97 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment the elements and particle emissions to be monitored in the west Limerick area in view of the limited range of tests to date; and if more measuring apparatus is required to properly determine the cause of deteriorating animal health on some farms downwind of several stacks. [8210/95]

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

106 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the delay of over three months since vets in the west Limerick area were told by an Environmental Protection Agency representative that monitors were to be installed in view of serious and abnormal animal health problems. [8408/95]

The Environmental Protection Agency is undertaking a co-ordinated investigation in the west Limerick area, involving the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Teagasc and the Mid-Western Health Board. The investigation involves, inter alia, extensive monitoring, sampling and testing of air emissions, soil and vegetation by four specialist groups established to deal with the range of issues involved. The emissions to be monitored, and the necessary equipment, are matters for decision by these groups. There has been no avoidable delay on the part of the Environmental Protection Agency in the installation of additional air monitors for the purposes of the investigation.

An inter-departmental committee consisting of the secretaries of the Departments of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Health and the Environment has been established by the Government to oversee progress on the investigation and to address any emerging requirements.
