Vol. 454 No. 1

Written Answers. - Border Region Funding.

James Leonard

Ceist:

70 Mr. Leonard asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the steps, if any, he will take to ensure an even spread of funding over the entire Border region in view of the report of the recent joint business council meeting in Belfast which discussed the Delors peace package, the focus of which was on projects on the east coast. [10354/95]

Allocation of resources under the European Initiative for Peace and Reconciliation will be based on the five priority areas listed in the Commission Guidelines, namely employment, urban and rual regeneration, cross-Border development, social inclusion and productive investment and industrial development.

The initiative is a special support measure for peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border counties. It is designed to benefit all communities in an equitable and balanced way, while focusing more particularly on those areas and sections of the population suffering most acute deprivation.

The Irish and British Governments and the Commission are agreed that the primary criteria in the selection of projects for funding under the initiative will be their relevance to the stated objectives of the initiative.
