Vol. 454 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Education Project.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

127 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education, in view of her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 141 on 23 May 1995, if her attention has been drawn to the fact that this special education project, which does early preventative work with individual children who are at risk and has long term benefits for these children and for society, has been working successfully for the past five years but cannot progress without direct assistance from her Department in particular, as a full-time counsellor or therapist and resource teacher are essential at this stage; and if she will have arrangements made that officials from her Department will visit the school to see the benefits involved firsthand in view of the experimental approach involved in this project which could be applied in other disadvantaged schools to help cope with the problem of seriously disruptive children. [10516/95]

I am aware of the work carried on in the school in question to address the problems of disruptive-disturbed pupils in primary schools. The Deputy will be aware that my Department is currently considering models of response for such schools and the needs of the schools referred to are being fully considered in this context.
