Ceist:

138 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Education if she will appoint a remedial teacher to schools (details supplied) in County Cavan with effect from September 1995; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10951/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 132 and 138 together.

I recently allocated 55 remedial teacher posts to the primary school sector. These posts are effective from the commencement of the 1995/96 school year. Schools were selected on the basis of priority of need as determined by my Department's primary inspectorate and having regard to data submitted by the schools.

Unfortunately, on this occasion, the schools referred to by the Deputy were not successful.

This allocation brings the total number of remedial teacher posts in the primary sector to 1,188.

In keeping with the Government's commitment to increasing access to remedial education, I will continue to review needs in this area and consider how best these needs can be addressed within available resources. I wish to assure all schools which applied for a remedial teacher post, but were unsuccessful on this occasion, that their needs will be considered in this context.
