I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the enforcement of the Intoxicating Liquor Acts, that they consider that, in general, the legislation to combat underage drinking is satisfactory.
As regards the statistical information sought by the Deputy, I should point out that the Annual Report of the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, for 1993 contains detailed statistics for the entire State in relation to offences against the Intoxicating Liquor Laws. A copy of the report has been presented to the Oireachtas Library. Less detailed statistics under this heading are also set out in previous Annual Reports on Crime.
The detailed information along the lines sought by the Deputy for the year 1994 is available only for each Garda Division. As information on crime is collected by the Garda Síochána on a Divisional. District and sub-District basis; statistical data is not, therefore, available on a county by county basis. The information sought by the Deputy insofar as it is available is set out in the form of the following tabular statement.
Statistics for the year 1994 of proceedings and convictions for offences of supplying or selling drink to persons under 18 years by (a) holders of on-licences and (b) holders of off-licences.
