Vol. 454 No. 7

Written Answers. - Customers' Charter.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

30 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he supports the trade union call for a customers charter for An Post which would guarantee delivery times to homes and businesses. [8959/95]

The principal objects of An Post, as set out in the Postal and Telecommunications Services Act, 1983 are to provide a national postal service within the State and between the State and places outside the State and, so far as the company considers reasonably practicable, to satisfy all reasonable demands for comprehensive and efficient postal services throughout the State.

In the document.A Government of Renewal, the Government asserts the importance of reform in the delivery of public services. The aim will be to achieve and demonstrate value for money, high standards of service, efficiency, courtesy and accountability. A central objective will be to assert the authority of the consumer/client of public services.
In line with this I have asked An Post to develop a customer charter with a view to publication later this year. This will set out more specifically the performance standards which customers are entitled to expect in relation to their dealings with the company and will encompass the matters referred to by the Deputy.
