Vol. 454 No. 7

Written Answers. - Representations to Northern Ireland Authorities.

John Ellis

Ceist:

49 Mr. Ellis asked the Taoiseach the representations, if any, he intends to make to the Northern Ireland Office regarding the early expected release of Father Brendan Smyth; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11393/95]

As I informed the House during replies to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 1 to 22 on 13 June, it is understood that very careful consideration would have to be given by the Northern Ireland authorities to any application made on behalf of Fr. Smyth in relation to eligibility for "home leaves". I also indicated that the Northern authorities would take careful note of any advice they might receive from social service agencies in Northern Ireland. They would also have regard to the position in regard to possible future prosecutions in the case of Fr. Smyth. I have no plans to make representations to the Northern Ireland authorities on the matter as it would not be appropriate to do so.
