Vol. 454 No. 7

Written Answers. - Suicide Statistics.

Pat Upton

Ceist:

53 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health the occupations and professions of people in Ireland who are most likely to commit suicide. [11394/95]

Limerick East): The death registration system is the principal source for statistical information on causes of death, including deaths by suicide. Information on particular occupations and professions recorded on death certificates is in all countries, however, known to be subject to many sources of bias, incompleteness and unreliability. For this reason the Central Statistics Office does not provide any analysis of cause of death by occupation in its annual reports on vital statistics. The possibility of improving the quality of occupational information recorded on death certificates is one of the issues under consideration in the context of the overall review of the registration legislation currently being undertaken by the Department of Equality and Law Reform.
