Vol. 454 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mushroom Industry.

James McDaid

Ceist:

81 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his views on the state of the mushroom industry (details supplied) in the Border counties; and if his Department will consult with the Department of Finance in this regard. [11533/95]

The mushroom industry has grown substantially in recent years from output valued at £36 million in 1989 to £54 million in 1993. It provides valuable employment in rural areas. Exports continue to grow.

I recognise that the strength of our currency relative to sterling has — at least in the short term — created a more difficult environment in the UK which is our main export outlet.

The industry has made representations on a number of occasions regarding the interpretation of the legislation relating to the taxation of casual workers. This has been fully examined by the relevant Departments which are satisfied that the provisions are being correctly applied to the mushroom sector.

Despite the difficulties being encountered by the industry I believe that it still represents an attractive investment opportunity. I believe the industry will continue to improve and remain competitive.
