Vol. 454 No. 7

Written Answers. - Ballantines (Sligo) Pier.

John Ellis

Ceist:

93 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for the Marine if he will make an Order under section 39 of the Fisheries Act, 1980, regarding access to a point known as Ballantines Pier, Lough Arrow, County Sligo, where locals are being prevented access to the public pier erected by Sligo County Council. [11512/95]

Section 39 of the Fisheries Act, 1980, provides that the Central or a Regional Fisheries Board may apply to the Minister for an Order to be made creating a right of way by a particular route over any land to enable a board to perform statutory functions under the Act or to enable fishermen to gain access to fishing waters. No application for such an Order in relation to access to Ballantines Pier has been made to date.

I understand that anglers have experienced difficulty in gaining access to Ballantines Pier on Lough Arrow. The North Western Regional Fisheries Board is aware of these difficulties and is currently in discussion with Sligo County Council and Bord Fáilte with a view firstly to clarifying whether a public right of way to the pier already exists.
