Vol. 455 No. 2

Written Answers. - International Treaties and Conventions.

Dermot Ahern

Ceist:

145 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the international treaties and conventions she intends to sign; the number that have been signed; the number that have been signed but not ratified; the number signed which have been ratified but have not been put into force; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12009/95]

The information sought by the Deputy in relation to my Department is as follows: Conventions which are in the course of signature/ratification: The European Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters; The European Convention on the Acquisition of Firearms by Individuals; The United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances; The Council of Europe Convention on Laundering, Search, Seizure and Confiscation of the Proceeds of Crime; The Convention adopted between the member states of the European Communities regarding the application of the principle of double jeopardy.

Conventions which have been signed and for which legislation will be required to permit ratification: Convention determining the State responsible for examining applications for asylum lodged in one of the member states of the European Communities; Convention on the transfer of sentenced persons; The Convention on Simplified Extradition Procedures adopted between the member states of the European Union.

There are a number of draft conventions under discussion concerning a range of topics. Until these are finalised it is not possible to say whether Ireland will sign and ratify them.
