Vol. 455 No. 4

Written Answers. - Urban Initiative.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

33 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Taoiseach the current position regarding applications for projects under the EU Urban Initiative; the reason for the delay; the last proposal put to Brussels; if the final decision is for Brussels or his Department; if the submission from Ballymun, Finglas and Northside Partnership is successful; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12167/95]

Mary Flaherty

Ceist:

35 Miss Flaherty asked the Taoiseach if it is anticipated that there will be a second URBAN programme following completion of the first. [12308/95]

Agreement has now been reached with the European Commission that the URBAN Initiative will apply in Cork and Dublin. In Cork URBAN will apply on the north side of the city. In Dublin the URBAN locations will be west Tallaght-Clondalkin and Ballymun-Finglas-Darndale, where there will be a particular emphasis on Ballymun. Being a European Union Initiative the areas where URBAN is to apply required the agreement of the European Commission.

The details of the implementation of the initiative in the selected areas will now be finalised by my Department with the European Commission. I understand that the European Commission is considering allocating further funding to the URBAN Initiative but I do not have specific details at the moment.
