Vol. 455 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dáil Committee Attendance.

Dermot Ahern

Ceist:

40 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance if the Government will implement its promise contained in the programme A Government of Renewal to ensure that all appointees to high office in the State, such as the Attorney General, the DPP, the Comptroller and Auditor General and the Governor of the Central Bank, shall attend the relevant Dáil committees as appropriate and subject to the legal constraints of their office; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11837/95]

Since the formation of the Government, arrangements have been initiated under which the Governor of the Central Bank can be called before the Select Committee on Finance and General Affairs and on foot of this arrangement the Governor has appeared before that committee and answered questions put to him by members.

It is intended to deal with the other office holders mentioned in the context of a Bill on privilege and compellability of witnesses appearing before Oireachtas Committees which I hope to introduce when the Dáil resumes in the autumn.
