Limerick East): The information sought by the Deputy is set out in the following tabular statement.
The management of health services, including the employment of staff are matters in the first instance, for each health agency.
As part of health service personnel policy, each agency has been asked to have due regard to the Government's commitment to the disabled when recruiting staff. I consider that further progress in securing an increase in the number of persons with disability employed may be best addressed in the context of an effective equal opportunities policy. With a view to ensuring that due regard is had in the health service to the principles underlying an effective equal opportunities in employment policy, health agencies are currently reviewing their employment practices. Once the review by agencies has been completed, my Department, in consultation with representatives of management in the various agencies, will consider the overall position to ascertain what further action may be required to complement measures already adopted by employers.
