Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - New Housing Developments.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

132 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the total amount of moneys given to Dublin Corporation for new housing developments; the number of housing units that will be provided; if he has satisfied himself that this will adequately address the need in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12624/95]

Dublin Corporation has been allocated £32.816 million for their local authority housing construction programme in 1995 — an increase of 38 per cent over the 1994 allocation of £23.85 million. This allocation covers commitments on completed housing schemes, houses in progress at 31 December 1994 (661 units), and the commencement or acquisition of 600 houses this year. The number of completions/acquisitions by the corporation in the first half of the year is 303.

The corporation has also been allocated £2.25 million for house purchase and improvement loans etc. in 1995 compared to the 1994 outturn of £1.925 million. Additional funding for individual voluntary housing schemes (capital assistance and rental subsidy) is made available to the corporation for payment to the relevant approved housing body providing the schemes as the need arises. To date in 1995 funding amounting to £2.85 million and £2.0 million has been made available to the corporation under the capital assistance and rental subsidy schemes, respectively.

It is a matter for Dublin Corporation to develop various approaches to the provision of social housing in its area having regard to the capital allocations made to it and to the other housing schemes provided for in the documentSocial Housing — The Way Ahead.
