Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Folklore Collections.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

188 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education the measures, if any, she is taking to make public the collections of folklore which were assembled in the earlier years of the State; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12434/95]

In 1971 the Government disbanded the Irish folklore commission and its work of collecting, editing and publishing material was transferred to the Department of Irish Folklore of University College, Dublin. UCD was given responsibility for the preservation and publication of the large collection of folklore material which the commission has assembled over the years. To assist in discharging this responsibility an advisory committee called An Chomhairle Bhéaloideasa, representative of UCD and the Minister for Education, was established to represent their joint interests. The collection is open to the public.
