Written Answers. - National Lottery Funding.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

220 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education if national lottery funding is made available to her Department to finance a scheme of grants; and if she will give details of this funding and the procedures involved for application. [13095/95]

National lottery funding is provided to my Department to finance a number of schemes of grants.

The youth affairs section of my Department receives national lottery funding for the provision of a number of grant schemes. The main areas of funding include annual grants for national voluntary youth organisations under the youth service grant scheme and a grant scheme of special projects for disadvantaged young people throughout the country. Total funding in respect of these schemes amounts to approximately £12.5 million in 1995.

The sport section provides annual grants to a number of organisations including national governing bodies of sport and vocational education committees to assist in the promotion and development of sport. The section also administers capital schemes to aid in the provision of sport and community recreational facilities, for which application forms are available in sport section. The total provided for sport in the 1995 Estimates is £13.45 million.

The Department has a scheme of grants towards tuition costs in colleges that organise Irish language courses, mainly during the summer months. Applications for recognition and the schedule of proposed courses are evaluated by the Department's inspectorate.
Grants are paid up to certain maxima based on the type and the length of the course, the number of students and the individual attendance records of those students. The total amount provided for this purpose in the 1995 Estimates is £550,000.
