Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Teacher Allocations.

Micheál Martin

Ceist:

241 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the exact amount of savings made by the decision to cut back on part-time teaching hours in second-level schools. [13308/95]

The teacher allocation for second level schools for a particular school year is determined by the enrolment at the end of the preceding September having regard to the current pupil teacher ratio and approved exquota and concessionary posts. I have approved the allocation of almost 600 additional teaching posts at second level for the 1995-96 school year at an estimated annual cost of £11.5 million.

Subject to agreed criteria, the question of filling these posts in a permanent, temporary or part-time capacity is a matter in the first instance for the school authorities concerned. Precise details of the level of part-time staff being utilised by schools in the current school year are not available in my Department.
