Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Incidence of Rape.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

259 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the shock experienced by local communities in the Raheny/Clontarf area following two brutal rapes during the month of August 1995; if she will ensure that every effort is made to bring the offenders to justice; and the measures, if any, her Department is taking to reduce the incidence of rape in society generally. [12932/95]

It is not the practice for the Minister for Justice to make statements to the House about the progress of individual Garda investigations except in singular instances where the circumstances of an investigation are so exceptional that such a course is deemed to be appropriate.

All I propose to say in this case is that I have been informed by the Garda authorities that both these incidents are the subject of a Garda investigation and that every effort is being made to satisfactorily conclude these investigations.

The Garda community relations section have issued two public information leaflets aimed at improving public awareness of crimes of this nature.

—Violence Against Women — which deals with the issue of rape and sexual assault, and

—Safety for Women — which contains crime prevention for women.
In addition the Garda authorities utilise every available opportunity to provide advice to the public, on this and many other types of crime, in both the national and local media. Features on measures that women can take to enhance their personal safety are frequently carried on the "Crimeline" programme.
