Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Prisoner Statistics.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

289 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Justice the number of people sentenced to terms of imprisonment in 1995. [13068/95]

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

304 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice the number of young offenders committed to Saint Patrick's Institution in each of the last three years; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13261/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 289 and 304 together.

The latest year for which committal statistics are available is 1993. In that year, there were 10,448 committals, remand and sentenced, of which 2,227 were to St. Patrick's Institution. It should be noted that quite a number of the 2,227 prisoners would have been transferred to a different place of detention as St. Patrick's serves as one of the committal prisons in Dublin, the other being Mountjoy. Precise figures for 1994 and 1995 will be published, in due course, in the annual reports on prisons and places of detention.
