Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Local Drug Strategy.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

307 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the composition, stated objectives and time scale for the local drug strategy which was recently announced by her. [13281/95]

As the Deputy will be aware, last July I received the approval of Government for a comprehensive series of legislative, financial, operational and organisational measures designated to combat the smuggling of drugs into this country.

I have already dealt with this issue extensively in the Dáil on 26 July last. (Dáil Debates Volume 455 No. 7 columns 1811-1843). The measures to be taken were also dealt with fully in press statements issued by me on 19 July and 14 September 1995. In the latter statement, I also announced the assignment of a Deputy Commissioner of the Garda Síochána who will have direct responsibility for all Garda anti-drugs measures, and the creation of a post of Chief Superintendent to head up the new Garda Drugs Unit.
I am as anxious as the Deputy that these measures be implemented without undue delay and I have made arrangements to ensure that this happens. Many elements of the package are being put in place now and the necessary legislation is in preparation and will be brought to Government as quickly as possible.
