Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Legislation.

Joe Walsh

Ceist:

319 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare when he will publish the Social Welfare (No. 3) Bill; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13202/95]

The Government has given its approval for the drafting of the Social Welfare (No. 3) Bill, 1995. On completion of the necessary preparatory work, the further approval of the Government will be sought to publish the Bill. The Bill will provide for the abolition of the concept of "desertion" in cases of family breakdown and will provide support for men as well as women caring for children as lone parents. I have undertaken to consult widely with interested bodies and intend to do this before seeking approval from Government for fund proposals. The bill will also deal with a number of miscellaneous matters which need to be addressed before the end of the year.
