Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Motorised Vehicles Regulations.

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

425 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for the Marine the regulations which govern the use of motorised vehicles such as jet skis and motorboats in recreational waters, beaches, lakes, rivers and other areas; whether these regulations adequately protect public safety and the environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13262/95]

The Merchant Shipping (Jet Skis and Fast Power Boats) Regulations, 1992 enabled local authorities, regional fisheries boards, harbour authorities and the Commissioners of Public works to make proposals to the Minister to designate areas as being unsuitable, in the interests of safety of pleasure craft and their occupants, for the operation of jet skis and fast power boats.

These Regulations, in keeping with their statutory basis under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1992, were introduced to deal specifically and exclusively with the safety of pleasure craft and their occupants.
