Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Unemployment Levels.

Bertie Ahern

Ceist:

61 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance the anticipated average level of unemployment for 1995 taking into account the latest statistics. [13271/95]

The latest forecast for the average level of unemployment in 1995 is that published in Economic Review and Outlook 1995. It is estimated that the Live Register average for 1995 will be about 274,000 — a fall of 8,000 compared with 1994. The fall in unemployment does not reflect the growth in employment, which is expected to remain strong. The decline in unemployment is markedly slower than the growth in employment because, with increasing employment opportunities and less emigration, the labour force is expanding.

My Department continues to monitor the situation closely.
