Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Hospital Admissions.

Séamus Hughes

Ceist:

84 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Health the estimated number of admissions to hospital due to incorrect prescribing of medicinal products by general practitioners; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12910/95]

Limerick East): Statistics on in-patient admissions are collected by the Hospital In-patient Enquiry System (HIPE).

If the prescription or use of medicinal products leads to a hospital admission the clinical diagnoses are coded using the International Classification of Diseases. However, the data will contain no information relating to the correctness or otherwise of the prescription and it is not possible to retrieve the statistic requested by the Deputy.
