Vol. 456 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Uniforms.

James McDaid

Ceist:

13 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding the wearing of school uniforms at exam time; and if she will comment on the case of a person (details supplied) in County Donegal. [11152/95]

The responsibility for supervising the conduct of students during the exams is shared between the school and the exam superintentent. The final decision on who shall or shall not sit an examination is a matter for the superintendent. School managements are responsible for the conduct of students outside the exam hall. Candidates will be prevented from doing an exam by the superintendent only if their conduct is such as to upset other candidates. The person referred to by the Deputy sat his maths paper 1 examination on 8 June 1995, after originally being refused admission to his school by the acting school principal because he was not wearing the school uniform. As the candidate's family will be aware, all of the circumstances in which he sat his maths examination have been fully taken into consideration in the marking of his maths papers.
