Vol. 456 No. 3

Written Answers. - Balbriggan (Dublin) Pedestrian Crossings.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

124 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice her views on the practice by the Garda of turning off lights at pedestrian crossings for the whole day in Balbriggan, County Dublin, whenever a big match is being played in Croke Park involving a team from Louth or further north. [13862/95]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that it is their practice, when major football matches are played at Croke Park, to implement a traffic plan for Balbriggan to cater for the extraordinarily heavy traffic heading south before the match and returning north after the match. This can entail setting up diversionary routes, or, on occasions, switching off some of the pedestrian lights in the town temporarily to accommodate the pre and post match rush periods. This practice is also adopted in other locations throughout the country for the same reasons.

The primary concern of the gardaí in Balbriggan is to minimise traffic congestion in the town, and alleviate any inconvenience caused to local residents on such occasions. I should point out that when these operational measures are taken by the gardaí it is their practice to deploy a garda at each set of deactivated lights to assist in the orderly flow of traffic.
