Vol. 456 No. 3

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion Works.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Ceist:

161 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for the Marine the plans, if any, he has to allocate money for coastal erosion works at Tawin, Maree, Oranmore. County Galway, as outlined in a submission from Galway County Council: and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13976/95]

Tawin Island, County Galway, is one of four priority locations identified by Galway County Council for possible inclusion in the Department of the Marine's programme of works to be undertaken over the next few years. The other priority locations identified by the council are Gurteen Beach at Roundstone. Inishboffin Island and Inishmore Island.

The council's proposals and the proposals submitted by the other coastal local authorities have been examined and the projects to be grant aided during 1995 have been decided. Among those to be aided are Inishboffin Island, where a 75 per cent grant is being provided for a £100,000 scheme of gabion protection to the public roadway and undertaker services. A further 75 per cent grant is being provided for a £75,000 sea wall protection scheme to prevent the erosion of access to Gurteen Beach at Roundstone. Works at Tawin Island and Inishmore Island are not being grant aided during 1995. These locations will be considered further, along with the other priority proposals submitted, during 1996 and subsequent years.

I would like to remind the House that receipt of priority proposals from a local authority is no guarantee that any of their proposals will be undertaken or aided by the Department.
