18 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Justice the current number of people serving prison sentences for civil debt or the non-payment of fines; the average amount involved; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13794/95]
On Thursday, 28 September 1995, from a total of 2,089 persons in custody, four persons were in custody on warrants relating to non-payment of debts and 17 were in custody on warrants relating to the non-payment of fines imposed by the courts. The sentences ranged from five days to 90 days. The average amount involved was £761 excluding costs, and £800 including costs.
