Vol. 456 No. 3

Written Answers. - Placement of Garda Graduates.

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

32 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice the reason Cork has fared so badly in the placement of new Garda graduates in view of the fact that it received only one placement out of 89. [13062/95]

The deployment of Garda manpower and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the allocation of probationer gardaí is not in itself an indication of how a division is faring with regard to personnel as such allocation provides an opportunity to replace members who have resigned, retired, transferred, etc.

With regard to the placement of one garda graduate to Cork in August this year, I am informed by the Garda authorities that, in addition, there were seven experienced gardaí also transferred into the Cork east division on that occasion while only one member was transferred out. This means that the overall strength of the Cork east division was increased by seven on that particular occasion.
