Vol. 456 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rights of Refugees.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

48 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, he has to protect the rights of refugees, asylum seekers and people with humanitarian leave in order to allow them to remain in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11993/95]

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

134 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice when the Refugee Protection Bill will be published. [13888/95]

Liam Fitzgerald

Ceist:

135 Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice when the Refugee Bill, now being drafted within her Department, will be presented to the Dáil; the organisations her Department consulted prior to the drafting of the Bill; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13898/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 48, 134 and 135 together.

Subject to Government approval, I propose to introduce shortly a refugee Bill to replace the Refugee Bill, 1994 which is currently before this House.

The purpose of the new Bill will be to provide in statutory form for the status and rights of persons recognised as refugees and the procedures to be followed in dealing with refugee applications. Representations from a wide range of interest groups have been taken into account in the preparation of the Bill.
