Vol. 456 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hepatitis C Virus.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Ceist:

63 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Health the number of patients who contracted the hepatitis C virus who have requested their medical records; the number of patients to whom records have been supplied; the number of patients who have been denied their medical records; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13713/95]

Limerick East): Some 463 people, who have contracted the hepatitis C virus, have requested their medical records from hospitals. In 363 cases medical records have been supplied by the hospitals. In the outstanding cases, where records have not as yet been provided, the majority of requests are still being processed and in a small number of cases the records have not as yet been traced or cannot be traced, where there was a substantial lapse of time since the patient was discharged, or the person was never in fact a patient in the hospital.

I would like to emphasise that no one has been denied their medical records.
