The strategy document Recycling for Ireland undertook that the Government would, inter alia, continue and intensify the promotion of public awareness on recycling issues, in cooperation with local authorities and industry. Measures have been, and will continue to be, taken in line with this policy.
Priority is however being given at present, as envisaged in Recycling for Ireland, to the development of recycling infrastructure, in terms both of collection and processing facilities. An industry task force is completing proposals which I expect to receive shortly, for an industry-led recycling initiative. Appropriate publicity will be mobilised as this and other initiatives are developed. As regards publicity for waste management more generally, I refer to the policy statement on waste management issued in conjunction with the Waste Bill, 1995.
