Vol. 457 No. 4

Written Answers. - New Zealand Driving Licences.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

130 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to introduce reciprocal arrangements with New Zealand in relation to the issue of driving licences. [15631/95]

Licences issued in New Zealand do not meet an essential requirement of EU and Irish law in that they fail to distinguish between drivers who passed their driving tests in vehicles with automatic transmission and drivers who qualified in vehicles with manual transmission. I do not propose, therefore, to recognise New Zealand for the driving licence exchange purposes.
