Vol. 457 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prison Officer Recruitment.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

166 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Justice the present status of the panel established for prison officer recruitment as a result of the 1993 campaign; whether future vacancies will be filled from this panel; the recruitment numbers which will be required in the foreseeable future; and if she will clarify its status vis-à-vis the June 1995 recruitment campaign. [15576/95]

I am informed by the Civil Service Commission that a total of 855 candidates were called for interview from the 1993 prison officer competition to meet recruitment requirements. I understand that 192 candidates have been appointed to the Prison Service from this competition.

It is not expected that any further appointments will be made from the 1993 competition unless a sufficient number of vacancies arise in the coming months to enable a class of recruits to be called for training. It is proposed that future vacancies will be filled from the 1995 competition once interviews etc., have been completed. Recruitment will, in the short term, be based on natural wastage which in recent years has been of the order of 30 officers per annum.
