Vol. 457 No. 4

Written Answers. - Rollmop Herrings.

Michael McDowell

Ceist:

216 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for the Marine the plans, if any, his Department has to promote the supply of Irish-produced rollmop herrings in tins or jars for sale in Irish supermarkets; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15426/95]

Consumption of rollmops in the Irish market is very small and the product would normally be sold in a loose form mainly through delicatessen and fine food outlets.

Rollmops are not produced in a canned state in Ireland. However, there are six Irish companies which include barrelled rollmop herring in their product range. These companies have received some £403,200 in grant aid under the Operational Programme for Fisheries. This aid will help to upgrade and expand these companies and will help to ensure their long-term viability. The grant aid will also help to promote and secure supply of rollmop herring in the Irish market.
