Vol. 457 No. 4

Written Answers. - Deaths from Cancer.

Brendan Smith

Ceist:

28 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Health the incidence of death arising from cancer in each year since 1990 by county or health board area; the percentage of all deaths this represents; the proposals, if any, he has to improve cancer treatment services throughout the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15520/95]

Limerick East): I am arranging to have circulated in the Official Report a table which sets out the incidence of death arising from cancer in each year since 1990 by county and health board area. The figures are provisional as they are based on year of registration rather than occurrence.

As soon as I took office as Minister for Health I set as a priority the development of services to combat cancer. To this end I have established a Cancer Strategy Group in my Department to review, report and make recommendations on the provision of cancer services in this country.
The cancer strategy report will identify the aims of a comprehensive cancer service and review the current provision of treatment facilities. It will also have a specific focus on disease prevention and health promotion, rehabilitation and palliative care. I expect to receive this report before the end of the year.
